STRONGER TOURISM LOS ANGELES

In LA's number-one job generating industry, Hyatt workers lead the charge to make sure hospitality jobs are strong.

As of late 2009, more than 20 LA hotel contracts — representing nearly 5,000 workers — expired, creating a tremendous opportunity in Los Angeles County.

Across the county, workers will head to the bargaining table to discuss ways to improve the industry and improve their working standards. Workers seek to build upon good contracts won in previous years that provide living wages and affordable benefits. But even more, workers see the contract expiration as an opportunity to improve the overall tourism industry in Los Angeles County — an industry that now provides more jobs to residents than any other sector.

Together, workers and employers can better the industry by:

  • Increasing customer service and overall industry competitiveness through career ladder training opportunities for hotel workers
  • Expanding current efforts to diversify the hospitality workforce to be inclusive of greater LA
  • Expanding unionization in non-union hotels to ensure that all workers have safe workloads and their families have access affordable health benefits — important rights that can help ease reliance on public health systems

Starting with Hyatt

Much of this work  starts with the Hyatt, where workers are actively bargaining a new contract. Workers from the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza and Hyatt Andaz West Hollywood have called on the hotel corporation to take the high road. As our economy recovers and hotel occupancy rates return to normal levels, we call on the Hyatt to bring people back to work with livable wages. Make hotel workers part of the recovery!
