JOB OPENING: Member Services Representative

UNITE HERE Local 11 represents approximately 32,000 workers in the hospitality and multi-service industries in Arizona and throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties in California. We are housekeepers, food servers, cooks, dishwashers, bartenders and others in the tourism and food service industries. We have an immediate opening for a full time (M-F, 8-5) bilingual Member Service Representative. The person in this role will work out of the Phoenix office at 1021 S. 7th Avenue.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Greet members; answer questions and provide information on procedures or policies; maintain area clean and orderly
  • Receive payments by cash, check, or credit card
  • Issue receipts, refunds, credits, or change due to members
  • Count money in cash drawers at the beginning of shift to ensure that amounts are correct and that there is adequate change
  • Calculate total payments received and reconcile daily
  • Data entry; file maintenance
  • Review member lists and input adjustments to data system
  • Complete multiple responsibilities daily
  • Written and verbal communications with members, staff, and employers
  • Answer incoming telephone calls and retrieve daily messages related to union dues
  • Generate necessary database reports as required by membership department
  • Scan and enter new member applications and prepare new hire records
  • Record change of status including change in employment status
  • Record dues receipts and complete posting on an Excel sheet
  • Review spreadsheets and solve problems as necessary
  • Convert PDF files into Excel and format Excel sheets for upload
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements/Qualifications: 

The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, Word, and Access.
  • 2–3 years’ experience in related field.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills and high capacity for attention to details.
  • Typing between 60 and 70 WPM.
  • Proficiency in data entry and the ability to operate a 10-key data keyboard by touch with speed and accuracy is required.
  • Dues Processing – ability to enter data at a rate of a minimum of 10,000 key strokes per hour with an error rate not to exceed two percent.
  • Proficiency in cash handling skills.
  • Ability to work independently within the context of a plan.
  • Good mathematical skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills; must work well with others
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • All applicants must have a resume with six months of recent office experience and a recent employment reference.

All eligible applicants will require testing in math, typing, and 10-key.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Following a successfully completed six-month probationary period, this role is a member of the Local 11 staff union. Compensation and benefits are determined by collective bargaining.
  • The current pay rate for this role for the first year is $18.45 per hour.

JOB OPENING: Grievance Handler

UNITE HERE Local 11 is a progressive, movement-based labor union working to improve labor standards in the hospitality sector. Based in Los Angeles, we represent over 35,000 workers employed in hotels, restaurants, airports, sports arenas, and convention centers throughout Southern California and Arizona. Reflecting the needs of our membership, we are at the forefront of efforts to defend the rights of immigrants, people of color, and women in the workplace and in the political sphere.

We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to serve as a grievance handler for our growing organizing and contracts teams. The program includes training and hands-on experience in worker interviewing, contract enforcement, organizing, and campaign strategy. As a grievance handler with Local 11, you will be part of a larger effort to organize workers and defend their rights, win better wages and working conditions, and build power for workers across the Union’s jurisdiction.

UNITE HERE Local 11 has four offices in California (Los Angeles, Garden Grove, Inglewood, and Long Beach) and one in Phoenix, Arizona. This position works primarily from our main offices in Los Angeles.

GRIEVANCE HANDLER

Job Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct worker interviews and site visits to investigate potential violations of collective bargaining agreements and legal protections;
  • Support Local 11 attorneys and organizers in filing administrative complaints where violations implicate local, state, or federal law;
  • File grievances on behalf of workers and ensure that grievance procedures are followed;
  • Correspond with company representatives concerning grievance meetings, requests for information related to grievances, and other matters;
  • Work with organizers and Local 11 attorneys to educate workers regarding their contractual and legal rights;
  • Train Union staff, shop stewards, and members on grievance handling and contract enforcement;
  • Maintain our grievance module and other organizational systems to ensure the grievance process is followed and filings are timely;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Pay and Benefits

Pay and benefits are determined by the Local 11 staff union contract. The pay rate for probationary grievance handlers in 2022 was $19.71. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, employer contributions to a union pension fund, and legal services.
