UNITE HERE Local 11 is a progressive, movement-based labor union working to improve labor standards in the hospitality sector. Based in Los Angeles, we represent more than 35,000 workers employed in hotels, restaurants, airports, sports arenas, and convention centers throughout Southern California and Arizona.
We are seeking a responsible, dedicated individual to join our maintenance team. Working under the general supervision of the Operations Manager, the custodian is responsible for overall building and grounds maintenance, repair functions, and preparation for and assistance with events and actions.
UNITE HERE Local 11 has four offices in California (Los Angeles, Garden Grove, Inglewood, and Long Beach) and one in Phoenix, Arizona. This position works primarily from our main offices in Los Angeles.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure spaces are prepared for the next day by gathering and taking out trash, dusting, cleaning and polishing furniture, machines, equipment, walls, ceilings, vents, and fixtures.
  • Set up, arrange and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, etc. to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
  • Sweep and mop floors, clean up spills, vacuum and shampoo carpets.
  • Service, clean, and supply restrooms and kitchens (e.g. soap, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Wash mirrors, glass partitions and windows.
  • Clear out and clean refrigerators.
  • Maintain outer premises, green space and parking lots, by watering plants, trimming bushes, removing weeds, using hand and power trimmers, cleaning entrances using broom and/or blower.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs (replacing lights, fixing door handles, minor leaks, painting, etc.)
  • Report vandalism and the need for major repairs and oversee repairs.
  • Keep cleaning supplies in stock, requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
  • Secure facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting the alarm.
  • Undertake occasional tasks such as lifting heavy items, moving chairs/furniture etc. either manually or using hand trucks.
  • Track inventory for supplies and ordering.
  • Distribute and assist with action supplies and equipment.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of hand tools and to operate cleaning/maintenance equipment, such as floor buffers, carpet shampooers, vacuums, mops, brooms, dusters, and various hand tools
  • Knowledge of proper handling of cleaning chemicals and materials
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and under deadlines
  • Attention to detail and conscientiousness
  • Ability to coordinate several concurrent assignments
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and work as a team with those contacted in the performance of duties
  • Ability to maintain communication with supervisor and director
  • Familiarity with basic landscaping and handyman practices
  • Ability to perform the physical aspects of the job as described above
  • Basic math skills
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred

Pay & Benefits

Pay and benefits are determined by the Local 11 staff union contract. The pay rate for probationary maintenance staff in 2022 was $19.02/hour. Benefits include health, vision, dental, life, employer contributions to a union pension fund, and legal services.

JOB OPENING: PC Technical Support Specialist

Summary

Under the general direction of the Technology Director, the PC Technical Support Specialist provides technical and educational support to UNITE HERE Local 11’s on-site and remote PC and Mac users to answer questions, resolve issues, and increase end-user productivity with minimal downtime.

Location: Regional: Southern CA and Arizona
Reports to: Technology Director

Job Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Handle Tier 1 help desk escalations through tickets or phone.
  • Respond to, update, and complete trouble tickets in system used to track request calls and dispositions.
  • Provide ongoing support to PC and Mac users in the daily use of the systems implemented, including, but not limited to: training users, answering questions, and suggesting methods to increase user productivity.
  • Escalate issues and act as a liaison between users and appropriate upper-tier support technician if unable to resolve requests.
  • Evaluate and analyze requests for computer hardware and software to be purchased and/or added to one of UNITE HERE Local 11’s local area networks. Order equipment and/or related supplies on behalf of end users.
  • When time permits, assist in the implementation of database applications. Implementation phases include systems design, development and modification, testing, documentation, training and post implementation review.
  • Support audio and video equipment in conference rooms and provide troubleshooting for remote staff.
  • Maintain and monitor internal/external assets to ensure accurate inventory records.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Education or equivalent experience: BS in Computer Science/Information Technology/Network Engineering/CIT/Computer Engineering/Systems Engineering, Apple Certified iOS Technician, and work experience troubleshooting PCs and Macs in a high-pressured office environment.
  • Specialized knowledge or skills: Extensive knowledge of networks, hardware, printers, MS software, applications, and operating systems, cloud computing, and IT Service Management (ITSM).
  • Additional qualifications: Interested in improving productivity with computers; excellent hardware and software troubleshooting, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Required attributes: Excellent communication skills. Must be able to listen, understand, and speak with clarity to figure out the problem and to be able to explain the solution, if necessary.
  • Enthusiastic about being part of an organization that improves the lives and well-being for more than 31,000 hardworking individuals.
  • Overnight travel is required: Approx. 20%
  • Driver license required

Pay and Benefits

Pay and benefits are determined by the Local 11 staff union contract. The pay rate for probationary IT staff in 2022 was $22.11. Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, employer contributions to a union pension fund, and legal services.

JOB OPENING: Grievance Handler

We are seeking a dynamic and passionate individual to serve as a grievance handler for our growing organizing and contracts teams. The program includes training and hands-on experience in worker interviewing, contract enforcement, organizing, and campaign strategy. As a grievance handler with Local 11, you will be part of a larger effort to organize workers and defend their rights, win better wages and working conditions, and build power for workers across the Union’s jurisdiction.

GRIEVANCE HANDLER

Job Responsibilities

include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conduct worker interviews and site visits to investigate potential violations of collective bargaining agreements and legal protections;
  • Support Local 11 attorneys and organizers in filing administrative complaints where violations implicate local, state, or federal law;
  • File grievances on behalf of workers and ensure that grievance procedures are followed;
  • Correspond with company representatives concerning grievance meetings, requests for information related to grievances, and other matters;
  • Work with organizers and Local 11 attorneys to educate workers regarding their contractual and legal rights;
  • Train Union staff, shop stewards, and members on grievance handling and contract enforcement;
  • Maintain our grievance module and other organizational systems to ensure the grievance process is followed and filings are timely;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Local 11 is presently seeking an Accounting Clerk – Payables/Receivables. This position reports to the Senior Accountant.

ACCOUNTING CLERK -PAYABLES/RECEIVABLES:

Summary:  Accounting Clerk – Payables/Receivables is responsible for basic record keeping within standard accounting protocol and policies of the organization. They are primarily responsible for the day-to-day processing of accounts payable and receivable, as well as ensuring compliance with UNITE HERE’s shared service agreements with other organizations.

Job Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with any or all of the following: cash and check receipts, cash and check disbursements, cash journals, accounts receivables and accounts payable, and payroll activities, making sure that all payroll records are accurate and up to date.
  • Assume the responsibility of receiving and sorting incoming payments with attention to credibility and validity of debit accounts.
  • Manage the status of accounts and balances and identify inconsistencies.
  • Issue and post bills, receipts and invoices.
  • Update accounts receivable and general bookkeeping databases with new accounts or other necessary data.
  • Communicate with clients about incoming and outgoing payments, deadlines, and accounts and provide troubleshooting support as necessary. .
  • Write thorough reports on billing activity with clear and reliable data.
  • Create reports and balance sheets that document overall receipts.
  • Update client accounts based on payment or contact information.
  • Answer employee questions and requests regarding rules and regulations.
  • Provides general organization support by entering, formatting, and printing information; organizing work; answering the telephone; relaying messages; maintaining equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains quality service by following organization standards.
  • Performs related tasks and projects as assigned.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • College degree or formal or on the job training/experience in bookkeeping practices. May include business school, vocational school or college courses.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement or other progressive movements.
  • Ability to learn and observe all policies and procedures.
  • Excellent computer skills are required in all Microsoft applications, especially Excel and/or other financial programs, such as QuickBooks, ADP, MIP, etc.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish, written and oral.

The office environment is fast paced and unpredictable. The candidate must be able to work well under pressure, individually, and as a team player.

Pay and benefits for this role are set by the Local 11 Staff Union contract. Starting pay is set at $19.52 an hour. We offer an excellent benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and pension.
