PERSONNEL ADMINISTRATOR POSITION

JOB TITLE: Personnel Administrator

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Personnel Administrator will perform a wide variety of professional and administrative duties in the areas of general human resources: benefits management, staff policy management and compliance with employment laws. The Personnel Administrator will be responsible for providing support to the Staff Director to develop and oversee systems to address a range of personnel issues. This role is full-time, exempt.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, recommend best practices; review policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  2. Assist the leadership of the union in implementing personnel policies and practices that are aligned with overall organizational goals.
  3. Conduct the on-boarding process for all new hires and provide ongoing training and support on administrative procedures related to employment to staff and rank-and-file workers employed by the union.
  4. Provide support to union leadership in explaining and implementation of personnel policies with their staff.
  5. Assist the Staff Director in developing and maintaining systems to track the regular evaluation and development of staff.
  6. Maintain complete personnel records for all staff.
  7. Assist the Payroll department to ensure accurate and timely submission by staff of all pay, expense and benefit-related paperwork.
  8. Interface with tenants of the union and other service providers around any personnel policies applicable to them.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements:

Bachelor’s degree

3-5 years of Human Resources and/or personnel administrative experience in a non-profit organization.

  • Demonstrated passion for progressive politics and social justice
  • Experience providing feedback and advice to employees on compliance issues in a proactive and compassionate manner.
  • Basic knowledge of State and Federal employment practices, policies, legal & EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) guidelines, as well as compensation, wage and hour, benefits administration.
  • Must be detail-oriented and organized, with excellent follow-through and analytical skills.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface with others inside and outside of the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Excellent digital skills (Microsoft and Google Suites) and capacity to quickly learn and train staff on new apps, database programs.
  • Must be able to work independently with the ability to juggle priorities and manage time to effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a diverse, fast-paced environment and multi-task.

OPEN POSITION: RESEARCH ANALYST 1, CORPORATE RESEARCH

UNITE HERE is known throughout the labor movement for innovative and effective research, and impressive grassroots mobilization of workers and community allies to win justice for low-wage workers in the service-sector (specifically, in hotels, gaming, food service, laundry and apparel manufacturing and retail).  Through organizing and winning good contracts, UNITE HERE members have made hundreds of thousands of traditionally low-wage jobs into good, family-sustaining, middle class jobs. UNITE HERE boasts a diverse membership – largely Latino and Asian immigrants and African Americans – with a majority being women.  

Research Analyst job responsibilities include:

* Research companies using a wide variety of sources, including published databases, on-line and Internet sources as well as informational interviews with union, industry and financial sources.
* Conduct local and field research on companies and industries.
* Develop analysis and adapt it for various audiences (e.g. staff, workers, shareholders, the public).
* Develop expertise in UNITE HERE industries.
* Work with UNITE HERE members, organizers, and regional staff, as well as community members and elected leaders.

Desired Qualifications include:

· Activist experience and commitment to fighting for workers’ rights
· BA Degree, preferably in economics, business or labor studies or relevant research and/or organizing experience (labor, political or community)
· Strong analytical, writing, and interpersonal skills
· Willingness to travel and to work long hours
· Familiarity with database and word processing software
· Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines, and thrive in a fast-changing, emerging set of circumstances where it will be necessary to work independently and take initiative.

COMMUNICATIONS ORGANIZER

UNITE HERE Local 11 represents 32,000 hospitality workers across Southern California and Arizona. Our local is the fastest growing in the private sector. We’re looking for a creative and energetic communications organizer to strategize  and implement campaigns.

  • Responsibilities
  • Field press requests, write media advisories and press releases, build relationships with reporters, and pitch reporters about events and campaigns
  • Work with organizing teams to identify powerful worker testimonials and earned media opportunities; prepare spokespeople
  • Create simple flyers and other promotional materials
  • Manage social media editorial calendar for multiple platforms to maximize post engagement and reach. Create post content, take photos and/or short videos, go live, and assemble simple graphics
  • Strategize and build online actions to engage and grow email lists of members and potential allies
  • Strategize, write, and implement messages and campaigns for email, broadcast text, and peer-to-peer texting; monitor performance, engage with responses, and train others
  • Write for diverse audiences, e.g. websites for union members or consumers, online ads for the general public, social media posts for hospitality industry workers generally
  • Update website content as needed

Qualifications

  • Some experience in field or online organizing or political campaigns
  • Some experience in media relations, communications, or marketing
  • Demonstrated passion for progressive politics and social justice
  • Ability to write concisely, clearly, and quickly with minimal oversight or copyediting.
  • Technological savvy and ability to learn new databases, online platforms, etc. relatively quickly. Experience shooting and editing short videos is a plus but not required
  • Bilingual in Spanish is an important plus but not required

Strong candidates could be organizers with field experience who are interested in moving into communications. Someone with professional campaign experience in public relations or marketing who has a demonstrated interest in organizing and social justice could also be a good fit.

This is a full-time position. Compensation based on experience.
