FOX 11: Disneyland hotel workers protest during D23 weekend: ‘No Magic in Our Paychecks’

Hundreds of Disneyland Resort hotel workers rallied near Harbor Boulevard and Convention Way during D23 weekend.

Union representatives with UNITE HERE Local 11 state that contract negotiations with Disney have yielded little progress after months of talks.

Those protesting included cast members, including cooks, dishwashers, and room attendants.

“When workers stand together, accountability is possible,” Ada Briceño, co-president of Unite Here Local 11, said during a press conference. “Behind this settlement are families who struggle to pay rent, put food on the table and make ends meet. While this cannot erase those hardships, it delivers long overdue justice to every employee. The message is simple: respect workers and follow the law.”

In-flight catering workers the Flying Food Group kitchen in LA reported exposure to cockroaches, mold, maggots, and excessive heat while preparing in-flight meals for flights leaving LAX. And—of course—the press worldwide went nuts over it! Here’s a sample of the coverage.

“It’s imperative that they have worker retention that will safeguard them when this specific project is finalized so workers can come back,” Ada Briceño, co-president of UNITE HERE Local 11, said in a interview. “If John Wayne (Airport) already has worker retention and it’s a county-owned property, then we also need to make sure that the Dana Point hotel also has worker retention.”

“When the pandemic hit, I was laid off without warning and without being given a reason why. I waited for a call back to resume work once the pandemic ends but I did not get a call back,” Roberto Medina, a maintenance engineer from Anaheim who worked at the hotel for about 10 years,  said at a press conference in Spanish.

WORKER VICTORY: AZ ELECTEDS CALL ON ARAMARK TO TAKE ACTION!

The Industrial Commission of Arizona has found in favor of four airline catering workers alleging unpaid wages from Aramark. The workers, who are refugees from Sudan and Afghanistan, are estimated to be owed more than $2,500 in total.

The original charges were filed in February, and the case highlights why wage enforcement matters, especially for workers who are often the most vulnerable.

VICTORY AT THE BEVERLY HILTON

Forty-seven workers at The Beverly Hilton who are being displaced by renovations at their hotel are receiving severance packages totaling over $6.6 million! Sixteen other workers were reassigned to new classifications and were able to keep their jobs at the hotel. All thanks to their union contract!

BREAKING NEWS: ALL CHARGES AGAINST DAVID HUERTA HAVE BEEN DISMISSED

The charges against SEIU-USWW President David Huerta have been dismissed by hte US Department of Justice. They tried to silence a union leader while he peacefully protested an ICE raid. They maced, tackled and arrested him. But did not succeed in silencing him. This is more than a legal victory. It is a victory for every worker who speaks up for justice, dignity, and the right to organize.

ITM: Universal Studio Workers Near Breaking Point Over Alleged “Poverty Wages”

“I’ve seen ‘We are not your minions’, ‘Don’t be a Grinch’, and ‘Universal runs on union power’ for months now,” the guest wrote. “Suddenly, I’m seeing ones that say ‘No more poverty wages’, so I figured things must have gotten worse if they stepped away from the cutesy messaging.”

Workers in the America Airlines Lounges at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport walked off the job on Wednesday morning over stalled negotiations for a better contract with their employer, Compass Eurest, a subcontractor for the airline.
